‘Surviving each floor is the name of the game.’

Steel Trap is a 2007 German slasher horror movie co-written and directed by Luis Cámara (Silencio). It stars Georgia Mackenzie, Mark Wilson, Pascal Langdale, Julia Ballard, Joanna Bobin, Annabelle Wallis, Adam Rayner, Frank Maier, Svantje Wascher.

Plot teaser:

Seven adventurous partygoers find themselves trapped in a sadistic game of death after accepting an invitation to a mysterious party. It’s New Year’s Eve, and a group of revellers are living it up on the roof of an abandoned skyscraper when five of the guests receive an intriguing text message. According to the sender, there’s an exclusive VIP party happening on the twenty seventh floor, and they’re all invited.

Once on the floor, however, the five guests and two party crashers quickly realize that they have fallen into a trap. The only way off of this floor is to follow a series of morbid clues left by a murderous psychopath. But who conceived these deadly games, and why have they targeted this specific group?

Reviews:

“The movie leans primarily on the Saw franchise in its layout with the occasional reference to things like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Carrie to spice things up and a twist in the tale that’s trying to be something along the lines of Scream. The problem comes in when it doesn’t deliver on the Saw premise like it was trying to, and the audience is left (more than a little bit) disappointed.” The B-Horror Blog

Steel Trap is the kind of film that substitutes creepy locations for plotting, and the slightest smatterings of gore in place of anything suspenseful or scary. To call it derivative would avoid its obvious attempts at being different, and yet this is nothing more than the standard slice and dice from 20 years ago, dressed up in a decidedly uninteresting set of the emperor’s new clothes.” Bill Gibron, Pop Matters

Steel-Trap-killer

“It’s also badly paced. There are only seven people, and you know it will come down to two of them, giving us a total of five kills. Well three of them occur in the film’s first 45 minutes, so the final 50 is primarily a series of boring arguments between the four survivors, one of which you’ve probably already figured out is the killer and one of which is the obvious last man standing. Occasionally they do things like look in computer monitors and see the “killer” … or run down a hallway or whatever, but it’s hardly exciting..” Horror Movie a Day

steel-trap_hanging

[Spoiler]: “What makes this go from a shitty movie to a SHITTY movie is the twist/”big reveal”. People I tell you this is one of the dumbest, most retarded reveals I’ve ever seen in a horror movie. Ok ok ok …. I’m gonna tell ya because this way I know for sure you won’t watch this.  The killer is one of the group members (as expected). Its the celebrity chef character and she assembled this group together and is killing them because they were all mean to her years ago when she was fat. That’s right; she was driven to murder and putting together more traps than Saw and The Collector combined because when she was younger she was a big ole fatty.” Anything Horror

Saturday-the-14th-Strikes-Back-1988-poster

‘One Hell of a party!’

Saturday the 14th Strikes Back is a 1988 comedy horror film, written and directed by Howard R. Cohen and produced by Julie Corman for Concorde. It is a sequel to Saturday the 14th.

Screen Shot 2015-01-01 at 18.39.00

The film stars Ray Walston (Galaxy of Terror; Blood Salvage), Avery SchreiberPatty McCormack (The Bad Seed; Crowhaven Farm; Silent Predators), Jason PressonJulianne McNamara, Rhonda Aldrich, Daniel Will-HarrisPamela StonebrookJoseph Ruskin. Horror icon Michael Berryman (The Hills Have EyesThe Devil’s RejectsSelf Storage) has a minor role as a mummy.

Plot teaser:

Eddie and his family have just inherited a spooky wreck of a house. What they do not know about the house is that it was built over an evil passage way, but they are soon to discover the wacky evil it releases…

Reviews:

A cynical Corman attempt to cash-in on the surprising video rental success of their already feeble 1981 comedy horror. Thematically, this is a throw-it-all-at-the-screen affair from Herman R. Cohen (who’d previously given the world Vampire Hookers, the original Saturday the 14th and Deathstalker). The self-reflective ending includes apocalyptic footage from previous Corman acquisitions and productions, including a bizarre one second shot of Johnny Ramone’s lower half and guitar from Rock ‘n’ Rock High School! Avoid, unless in a very charitable mood, or a die-hard Michael Berryman fan.

Adrian J Smith, Horrorpedia

Saturday-the-14th-Strikes-Back-1988-Michael-Berryman-mummy

“The film isn’t completely terrible though. There’s some cool looking puppets as well as entertaining stop motion throughout. There’s something moderately charming about the fact that the film never takes a second to stop. It’s one bad gag and bad joke after another. While the film doesn’t hold the same level of “so bad it’s good” praise that a Troll 2 or Plan 9 will receive it’s probably the only film where you get to see a werewolf spy on an olympic gold medalist in the shower.” Geekscape

Screen Shot 2015-01-01 at 18.58.21

” … few films are as entertaining as watching this movie try to be clever and fail. It’s simply that earnest and determined, and pity makes belly laughs deeper. Like a kid in socks trying to turn a corner on linoleum, like a drunken man hitting on a waitress, there is humor in watching repeated clumsy failure. For this, Saturday the 14th Strikes Back should be saluted.” Axel Kohagen, Slasher Studios

Screen Shot 2015-01-01 at 19.51.03

” … one of the most insane genre-related movies I think I’ve ever seen. If you’ve never experienced it for yourself, ST14SB basically makes Troll 2 look Oscar-worthy in comparison and yet, it’s really hard for me as a fan to hate on ST14SB because despite its numerous (and boy do I mean numerous flaws), you can tell it’s a movie with a horror-loving heart beating deep beneath its wacky surface and that’s something I can always appreciate as a fan.” The Misadventures of the Horror Chick

Cast:

Mathias Retamal, Barbara Perrin Rivemar, Claudia Goytia, Sara Camacho, Ramón Medína, Rubén Zerecero, Dulce Alexa, Anuar Zuñiga Naime, Lorena Gonzalez, Gilean Alducin Luciano.

The title is derived from a 1908 essay by John Kenneth Turner that highlighted the political and social situation in Mexico during the twilight of the long dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz.

Official plot synopsis:

México Bárbaro shows the world stories that form a part of our culture, and even some that have haunted us and made us have nightmares since childhood, those ones which took away our innocence. The boogeyman, trolls, ghosts, creatures, Aztec sacrifices, and of course our most beloved tradition, Day of the Dead, immerse in urban and rural stories are some of the issues that make up this anthology.

Reviews:

” … the film fails to be a cohesive conceptual anthology. When it world premiered at Sitges 2014, it was screened back-to-back with two other recent horror anthologies: V/H/S: Viral and ABCs of Death 2. If I’m going to compare it with those productions, well, México Bárbaro at least doesn’t try to unite its eight segments in a way that hardly makes any sense as V/H/S: Viral did, but it definitely lacks the concrete ideas — as well as the brutality and energy — that the best shorts from ABCs of Death 2 have. It’s a welcomed effort that could have been much more powerful.” Eric Ortiz Garcia, Twitch

Reviews:

“Writer/director Don Thacker makes this film work on so many levels. First, he tries many different techniques to make the story interesting and succeeds. Ian breaks the fourth wall with the audience early on and teaches a lesson on how little things become significant when one is depressed and lives alone. Next, Thacker moves the story forward through the use of animation (splendidly created by Jérémie Périn) and by inserting Ian into the very television programs he has been hooked on watching. Finally, the camera is utilized to make the most of a cramped and cluttered apartment.” Namtar, Nuke the Fridge

Motivational-Growth-Adrian DiGiovanni-2013

“The fact that 90% of this film takes place with a guy talking to the camera on his couch, all the while maintaining a creative, interesting, and intelligent edge all the way through, is a testament as to how great Motivational Growth truly is. The alternating dark and light tones give this film a unique texture, never really letting on as to where it will go next. Sure to poke, prod, and play with your brain in ways normal cinema does not, Motivational Growth is unlike anything you’ve seen before.” Ambush Bug, Ain’t It Cool News

Motivational-Growth-3

“It’s set in the 1990s, uses chiptunes by Alex Mauer for a soundtrack that sound straight out of a video game, and even has 8-bit video game style cutscenes for certain scenes that add even more character to the film. What’s even more interesting is the film’s budget, and what Thacker was able to do with it. Shot for just over $176K, the limited number of effects that Thacker was able to pull off were quite impressive. As far as the gore goes, there isn’t too much going on, but there are more gross-out moments than gore, such as Ian eating fungus, vomiting various types of goo, rotted dead bodies and more.” Pat Torfe, Bloody Disgusting

‘They do not come in peace’

Extraterrestrial is a 2014 US sci-fi horror film that was directed by Colin Minihan, based on a script by both Vicious Brothers (Grave Encounters and its sequel). It was previously known as The Visitors.

The film stars Brittany Allen (Dead Before Dawn 3D), Freddie Stroma and Melanie Papalia (Blade: The Series) as a group of friends that must defend themselves against an alien onslaught. Genre regular Michael Ironside (Scanners; Watchers; Abysm) has a cameo role.

The movie had its world premiere on April 18, 2014 at the Tribeca Film Festival under the banner of IFC Midnight.

Plot teaser:

Hoping to spend a romantic weekend in the woods at her parents’ cabin, April (Brittany Allen) is dismayed when her boyfriend Kyle (Freddie Stroma) invites his friends to party in the woods. As the group settles into the secluded location, they discover that a UFO has crashed nearby and that they are being observed by one of the craft’s survivors.

Reviews:

Overall, Extraterrestrial looks pretty good: the camera and lens work look significantly better than the budget suggests, the CGI is impressive, and white light spills from flashlights and windows like thick white gauze … Of course, the brothers splice found footage-style bits throughout the film, for reasons that remain indiscernible, and these scenes naturally look awful. More than that, they don’t add anything of value…” Greg Cwik, Indiewire

“There are moments here and there in Extraterrestrial suggesting a touch of self-awareness that they’re treading on well-traveled ground—but being self-aware about these clichés doesn’t change the fact that they’re clichés.” Michael Gingold, Fangoria

hero_Extraterrestrial-2014-1

“Unfortunately, its attempt to be scary fails because it never plays with the psyches of its characters. Nobody in the movie’s world believes these kids, yet the viewer knows immediately that the aliens are real, which kills… no… destroys any suspense. Instead, we’re forced to endure a plethora of fake jump scares.” Bloody Disgusting

” …plays like pretty standard slasher fare. It’s in the final act that the pic becomes more ambitious and interesting, though not quite enough to lift the whole from decent-time-filler status to something more inspired. Like the duo’s prior “Grave Encounters” movies, this is a well-crafted, watchable genre effort short on novel ideas and distinctive dialogue/character writing.” Dennis Harvey, Variety

“Unfortunately, once “Extraterrestrial” finally delivers its most emotionally draining scene, it keeps right on going. Thankfully, these are some of the film’s most visually impressive sequences. But by this point, Minihan and Ortiz’s lack of discipline, and frequent cribbing from just about everything, including The Matrix and Alien, has worn away a lot of good will. There’s a lot to like about Extraterrestrial, but not enough to leave you completely satisfied.” Simon Abrams, RogerEbert.com

” … the Brothers simply recycle the staples without any smarter purpose – there’s even a cabin in the woods, but just a plain old non-ironic, pre-Cabin in the Woods cabin in the woods. It’s all about as pleasurable as the inevitable alien anal probe. Extra-terrible, more like.” Jonathan Romney, The Guardian

Reviews:

‘ …an almost perfectly realized film, making the best of its humble budget and exploiting its stunning locations to maximum effect. MacDonald (who is well known in the North for his acting chops) is a major talent, who’s now crafted the best Canadian horror movie in ages.’ Chris Alexander, Fangoria

Backcountry is roughly an hour of build-up and then a rip-roaring 30 minutes of sheer terror, but it isn’t a slow burn that makes a desperate attempt to make an impression in the final act of the film.  That last half hour only is what it is because of all the character development and memorable moments you experience before.’ Perri Nemiroff, Collider

‘Involving and at times heartbreaking, Backcountry is an excellent thriller and another fine example of the innovative and talented crop of Canadian film makers that have surfaced these past few years.  If Grizzly was Jaws in the woods, think of this as 2003’s Open Water in the woods. Nothing wrong with that at all.’ Rob Getz, HorrorNews.net
